This project presents a nine-year photographic study documenting mothers and their children across various locations in Australia. Inspired by her personal experiences with pregnancy and the transition into motherhood, Lisa sought to capture the shared reality of maternal transformation—an experience often overlooked in cultural discourse.

In Australia, maternal care predominantly emphasizes medical support systems and the physical health of the baby, offering limited attention to the profound psychological and physiological changes experienced by mothers. The lack of diverse and realistic portrayals of postpartum life, including its physical and emotional challenges, reinforces unrealistic societal expectations. These unattainable standards contribute to maternal distress, exacerbating feelings of confusion, guilt, and isolation.

Motherhood, while deeply intimate and transformative, also presents relentless physical and emotional challenges. Recognizing and addressing these realities—particularly for those lacking adequate support—is essential for fostering maternal well-being and, by extension, cultivating healthier societies.
